Will Meryl Streep Voice Aslan? Why Narnia Fans are Divided on this Lion of a Rumor

It started with a whisper, a rumor from a source few had heard of, and quickly grew into a roar that echoed across the Narnia fan community. The news? That the legendary Meryl Streep was in talks to voice Aslan in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew. While it’s crucial to remember that this is, for now, just a rumor—no contracts have been signed, no official announcements made—the mere possibility has sparked a passionate and wide-ranging debate among fans. After sifting through over 785 comments on our social media, a clear picture of the community’s sentiment has emerged, and it’s one of deep concern, thoughtful consideration, and a powerful love for the source material.

The initial reaction for many was disbelief, with some hoping it was a late April Fool’s joke. But as more reputable sources began to pick up the story, the conversation shifted from “if” to “how” and, most importantly, “why.” The overwhelming consensus is not a rejection of Meryl Streep’s immense talent—far from it. In fact, a significant number of fans, like Alexandros Llewellyn, whose comment garnered 334 likes, suggested she would be a phenomenal choice for another iconic role: “Should get her to play the White Witch instead. She’d be awesome in that role. Aslan is just miscasting.” (Meta, 2025). This sentiment was echoed repeatedly, with many believing Streep’s gravitas and skill would be perfectly suited to the formidable Queen Jadis.

However, the idea of her voicing Aslan has been met with strong resistance, and it’s not rooted in misogyny, as a few comments have suggested. The core of the issue, for the vast majority of fans, is a deep-seated respect for C.S. Lewis’s original text and the powerful symbolism woven into the character of Aslan. As Michael Gleason aptly put it, “Aslan is definitely portrayed as a male in the books. It would betray CS Lewis’ writing and intention behind the character. Wanting the character to be portrayed in the light that He was intended is not misogynistic” (Meta, 2025). This is the heart of the matter for so many: Aslan is not just a talking lion; he is a deliberate and profound allegory for Jesus Christ. Lewis himself confirmed this, explaining that Aslan is how he imagined Christ would be in a world of talking beasts. To alter such a fundamental aspect of the character feels, to many, like a betrayal of the author’s vision.

The physical characteristics of Aslan are also a major point of contention. Desiree Tarrant’s comment, with 125 likes, cuts straight to the point: “he had a mane. He’s a male. I know not everyone understands that but it’s really simple. Mane = male. Fiction or not he was written by someone and they wrote him as a male. Switching to a female is disrespectful to the author” (Meta, 2025). The mane is not just a physical trait; it’s a symbol of his strength, his majesty, and, in one of the most poignant scenes in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, his sacrifice (Lewis, 1950).

Of course, not everyone agrees. Some have argued that since Narnia is a fictional world, the gender of a talking lion shouldn’t matter. But for a community that has grown up with these stories, that has found comfort, wisdom, and faith within their pages, the details matter immensely. The results of our own The Magician’s Nephew Fan Survey reflect this, with a strong preference for a male voice actor who can capture the blend of power and gentleness that defines Aslan.

Many fans have expressed a desire to see Liam Neeson, who voiced Aslan in the previous film adaptations, return to the role. His performance is, for many, the definitive voice of the Great Lion. As Amanda Morse, whose comment received 175 likes, stated, “I love Meryl, but Liam Neeson is still the only acceptable choice to voice Aslan” (Meta, 2025). Others have suggested actors like Morgan Freeman or Idris Elba, both of whom possess the kind of deep, resonant voice that fans associate with the character.

Ultimately, this is more than just a casting debate. It’s a conversation about faithfulness to the source material, about respecting an author’s intent, and about preserving the integrity of a story that has meant so much to so many. While we have immense respect for Greta Gerwig as a filmmaker and Meryl Streep as an actress, we hope they are listening to the voices of the fans. We are not a community resistant to change, but we are a community that cherishes the heart and soul of Narnia. And for us, Aslan is, and always will be, the Son of the Emperor-over-the-Sea.
